As for British playwrights, my personal favorites are:

    • Shakespeare [1564-1616] (The Tempest, King Lear)

    • George Bernard Shaw [1856-1950] (Pygmalion, Major Barbara)

    • Oscar Wilde [1854-1900] (The Importance of Being Earnest).

Many consider the plays of these three great writers to be just as enjoyable to read as they are to watch live.

Shakespeare can be difficult to read if you are unaccustomed to the Elizabethan English, but very much worth the effort you put into it. I recommend watching Shakespeare live or one of the BBC productions on DVD or video (usually available at your local library).

For young readers of Shakespeare (and older ones, too) who are afraid of the language, it can help to know the story before you read (or watch) the play. I'd recommend the story versions of Shakespeare by Charles Lamb. These can be found at:

George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion is the inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady. The original play is much funnier, in my opinion.

Oscar Wilde is considered by many too be one of the wittiest men ever. I often laugh aloud while reading his plays and stories.
