To both men and women could you please share examples of when you had to use your martial arts training in a real life situation, and was it effective? I know people often debate what martial arts are the most useful, I was wondering to hear some real life MA or self defense examples regarding it.

  1. i feel a bit pathetic compared to the first post here, my only situation was in a bar and some junkie came at me with a knife, i still cant really describe what happned as it was a blur, but i punched them several times to the face, graped the arm and busted the arm to get rid of the knife and them just made sure they couldnt fight back. note this is my best guess what happned from their injurys and others describtions. i nearly got busted for excessive force for this, d**n when people are high they dont feel pain they keep d**n fighting. my case the boxing and awarness training allowed me to fight in stand up and spot the proplem, in dealing with the knife and the ground/grappling stuff my styles now a weird mix of bjj, judo, wing chun and any good ideas for knife defence that me or my trainer come across.

  2. 4 times of any real note.

Guy tried to mug me. I got lucky in some respects. His hand got stuck in his pocket as he grabbed me and went for his knife. It was amazing because I knew he was following me clear back to my car, but I just didn't pay it that much mind. When I saw he was still coming, I yelled at him that I didn't have anything, I relaxed, and I watched him approach. Did a simple wrist lock and kicked him hard in the chest as he went down. I didn't even register what I had done until I was driving away.

Two guys were staring at me when I was in a fast food spot for dinner one night. They followed me out and, rather than lead them to my car, I turned around. One guy shoved, another threw a punch. I moved. Fight ensued, and I did just what I'd been trained for -- I stacked them, and made the fight one-on-one. Took one down and kicked him in the head, took the other with an armbar over my shoulder until I heard something tear in his elbow. I know I got hit a few times because I had some nasty bruises, but, for the life of me, still can't remember when they hit me.

One of my "friends" tackled me at a barbeque. He pinned me and started burking me (compression asphyxia by kneeling on the chest), yelling at me. I freed a hand, reached up to his trachea and began to squeeze and twist while ordering him off me. Kept hold as he got up and off. To this day, I still don't know what it was about. I don't see him anymore.

Strangest one: Two teenagers in mardi gras masks were assaulting a woman by her car as I was coming out of a best buy. They'd pulled their truck up behind her car, blocking it and gotten out and were getting "handsy" when I heard her. Dropped one from behind with my body weight, stepped on and over him, told her to run, struck the other one a few times, backhanded him in the throat, took him down with an elbow lock, and struck him in the neck. Then I walked away. Funny thing is, people just sat there and watched like it was some surreal thing. Nobody helped her, nobody helped me, but people watched it.

The stuff I'd learned from the USSD when I was a kid was worthless. Krav Maga had been a help with bar scraps when I was younger. But the Budo Taijutsu... Man, I may train in other martial arts just for the exposure later on, but I will never love any art the way I love the Bujinkan. I know that I've been lucky, just like I know I'm only a half-centimeter from where that luck runs out at any given time. I'm looking forward to leaving las vegas.
