Monetary policy:  Paul Volker, chairman of the Federal Reserve, 1979-1987, raising interest rates dramatically to end the inflation of the late 70's.  Alan Greenspan, chairman after Volker, cutting interest rates immediately after the stock market crash of 1987, during the recession of 1991, and the recession of 2002,

Fiscal policy:  Reagan cutting taxes in 1981 to stimulate the economy.  Ditto Bush in 2001.  The entire Roosevelt New Deal during the depression.  Gerald Ford vetoing one spending bill after another to curb government spending.
