Question:

Excel - How do you show two different scales in one chart?

I have a chart where if possible, and not having to add another axis, I'd like to have the scale be different when it's closer to zero then change when it gets beyond a certain increment. I'm working with three data points (lines) and they are all %.

Thanks in advance for help.

  1. Easy answer is that it cannot be done with excel in one graph.

If I were to tackle this, I would approach it by trying to seamlessly combine two graphs stacked on top of each other with all background formatting and superfluous items removed.  In essence, you want the lower graphic to have a small increment scale (0 to whatever minimal value you set) and the upper graphic to have gross scale measurements.

Lets assume that you have 0 to 10 and 10 to 100 for your two graphics.  The upper graphic would have a vertical range from 10 to 100 and the lower graphic would have 0 to 10.  The lower graphic would also have to be the width of the upper graphic, but a height equal to 1 vertical increment of the upper graphic (such as the height difference between 10 and 20)

There is a lot of formatting and tweaking which needs to be done to get this to look like one graphic.  It may never look right with a line vs. bar graphic, but you would have to try it to find out.
