Question:

Excel charts help needed?

I have a chart page that I created and I copied it and pasted it onto another excel page but on the first one you can't see the grid references (eg. A-Z along the top and the numbers down the side) but on the second one you can. Being slightly OCD this bothers me and I can't work out how to hide them on the second one. Anyone know?

The reason I've had to copy the chart is because the wizard has started messing up and the chart comes up like scribbles (before I even add any values) - anyone know why this might be? It worked for a few and how its gone all strange. Thanks

  1. Any chance of seeing a screen shot ? It might be easier to solve that way.

  2. You don't say what type of chart, whether ie, line or bar etc but most likely your problem probably stems from the fact that you may not have highlighted all the data needed to make the chart useful,or have chosen a type of chart that perhaps is not suited for your particular data layout. If you are using a bar, line or column, you probably have to highlight (through the series tab) the categories for the x axis labels. When you are in the wizard stage and see what it is going to look like if it doesn't look right at that stage, change from rows to columns to see if that changes it to something more suitable. Presumably last stage of wizard you are selecting option to have chart full size on separate page.

  3. I'm not sure about your second problem - a PrintScreen shot might help as already mentioned.  It could be that if you didn't specify the data range, the wizard has chosen a scale that is too small, making all the details bunch-up on top of one another.  In step 2 of the wizard, check the Data Range and Series tabs and alter as necessary.

The reason you've got the "grid references" is that you've pasted it onto another Excel page.  The original chart was created on a special chart page that doesn't have these and other features of a standard spreadsheet.  To turn them off, click Tools > Options > View tab and under Window options, untick Row & column headers.
