Where can I find an excellent English translation of the Grimm's fairy tales which :

- has the closest syntax to the original German version

- mainly archaic.

- the character's quotations were not changed to rhyme in English, but retains the original meanings in German

  1. Try Project Gutenberg?

Also if you read German try and find a bilingual student version.

You may find a free etext copy but it will not be "archaic" English but possibly have a Victorian flavour since Grimm's Fairy Tales were compiled from oral sources about two centuries ago and the first English translations was about the middle of the nineteenth century?

Check out Wikipedia ... sometimes the editors and compilers add lists of translations and sources for free texts.

Perhaps they have for this work?
