I am retired navy reserve and wanted to know if my daughter would be eligible for the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). She has bipolar disorder but I'm not sure if she'll qualify since I'm retired. Can anyone help?

  1. This is something that needed to be part of your active duty file prior to retirement but your best bet is to go to your local Tricare office and ask some questions.  This will only get you Tricare coverage if she is eligible though not extra pay.

  2. EFMP is a program to make sure you are stationed in an area where adequate resources are available to care for your dependents.  I can't imagine how this would apply to a retired sailor.  After all, you're free to pack up and move to anyplace where you can find better care.

  3. EFMP is only for active duty. The program is only to keep the dependant near major medical to insure adequate health care for the medical issues. It doesn't apply to retired because you are free to live whereever you want. The EFM program has categories from levels 1-6 that are used for detailing/orders purposes to make sure the family is not written orders to an area that doesn't have the care they need available. This has no affect on the service member as they can still be sent on an unaccompanied tour.
