Question:

Excess Deck Stain?

I just had a 16 x 20 deck built on the back of my house. Because it is about 12 feet up in the air, it is hard to stain the outside of it. I purchased a power sprayer and I sprayed 3 of the 4 sides of the spindles. A lot of that stain got on the decking. Once I have stained the decking I'm noticing that there appears to be "wet spots" on the decking and I think I may have it too thick. How do I get rid of the excess stain? I used Olympic Stain (oil). Am I going to have a mess to clean up now or will it be easy. I read somewhere I could use mineral spirits and a stiff brush and do it that way. I also don't want anyone tracking the extras back in the house from their shoes. Please help. I was hoping to have this job done before the nice long weekend.

  1. Water Pressure Washer, rent one 2000 PSI, use hot water from the tap, then you have to stain it all over again using a brush not a sprayer, you can rent or buy long ladder.

  2. Ok, what happened is that the overspray got on the deck and sealed it, Then when you stained the deck, the sealed part(spots) did not allow the wood to soak in the new stain so it just gave it a double coat and made the dark shiney spot.

A light sanding on the spots would be the most effective way to even out the finish. Sand, clean, rag or sponge the stain on to the spots and work it around till it is evened out.
