Excessive, heavy, bleeding (menstrual cycle/period) for a week? What could be the problem?

My mom is 45 years old and she has irregular periods. Since about a week ago she's had excessive bleeding. Her period has been on very heavy. She has to take 3-4 baths a day due to her heavy period...What could be wrong? She recently (about 2-3 months ago) had a cervical exam but nothing of significance was found. She's wondering if she should go to the hospital or not...Any suggestions, ideas are super helpful.

BTW: She's stressed that she is not pregnant. Her tubes are tied and the last child she had was in 1991.

Sometimes, your body produces a little too much lining in there and you end up with a period that lasts forever. Mine usually last about a week anyways.

And are you sure she's not pregnant or having a miscarriage? Unless her tubes are cut, she can still get pregnant and they can untie themselves. That's what happened to a friend of mine. She's had two miscarriages since her tubes were tied.

OMG I hope she is okay.  This might be her body's way of releasing extra uterine lining.  It could be  might way of getting ready for Menopause.  She should take vitamins and fast, Iron especially.  I would go to the doctor and get an internal ultrasound.  Brightest Blessings to you both.

it could be peri- menopausal symptoms, which may or may not resolve on their own.  i had to make a trip to the er a couple months ago for the same symptoms (i'm 33).  i got a blood transfusion and a followup appt. with a gyn doctor.  now i'm looking forward to an hysterectomy.  mom needs to see her ob/gyn and perhaps have a quick ultrasound done, something that will address her bleeding issue since a cervical exam doesn't really deal with that.  if mom gets dizzy when she rises from a sitting position, if her pulse rate is higher than 100bpm when changing positions, she needs to go to the er.  she needs an asap dr. appt. made at the very least.  Good luck mom!
