  1. The cost depends on the program. Here are a few websites of highly reputable programs:

    http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/home

    http://www.yfu-usa.org/

    http://www.asse.com/United_States/index....

And the program I think is the best is Rotary. It doesn't really have one specific website you have to search it by district, for instance you would search "Los Angeles Rotary" if you lived in LA. Then you should try and find out who the exchange coordinator is, but if you can't find that, just email the person who runs your district. Rotary's programs are also the cheapest costing only $3,900 for all countries.

Also the age matters on the organization you choose also. But generally the age is 15-18. You can choose summer programs, semester programs, or year programs. I would recommend the year program. Generally no you don't have to get shots, unless your not up to date with them, but you do have to get a TB test done. For host families there is a backround check done. You can bring american medicine if you need it. They don't except american money but usually you just change it once you get to Europe. Your allowed to contact your parents but it's best to keep the contact to a minimum. Lastly you learn the language by taking a language class in your host country and just by not speaking english. When your immersed in a language you will be surprised how much you actually learn in the first few months! You'll be fluent by then end of the program.

If you have any other questions feel free to email me :)

  2. Contact your guidance counselor at school.  You should be able to get some contacts.  Costs will vary depending on where you go.  You could be as young as 16, depending on the program.

Normally the program length is about 9-10 months.  There are scholarship programs for Germany--not sure about France.

You will need a passport and shots.  You undergo a background check and an interview and your parents could be checked as well.  Your host family would also have to pass a background check.

If you have medical needs you would need to make arrangements.  Not sure what they would be.  You contact your parents by e-mail, phone or letter.

You would be well advised to learn as much French as you can before you go.  You will also likely have to attend a language camp in France.

While in France you would use Euros.  The conversion is manageable and you just have to learn the value of the different money.
