  1. Alright I will not say -----, but you will only get (at best) the am-ex tourist rate and independent money changers are few and far between in the states as a whole. You will almost certainly have to pay commission if you find one.

    Good luck.

  2. well, it is true that currency exchange is much cheaper in the UK than in the US (although I've never seen a true 0% commission - either there is a commission or there is a spread between what they are willing to sell a currency for and what they are willing to buy it for, or most often, both).

I would say to use your credit card whenever possible (they exchange rate is usually the best you'll find), and then as much for convenience sake as saving money, get cash through one of the ATM machines (usually they are linked to a network of banks which most likely includes yours). Get the cash in as big of chunks as the machine will let you (often $300 a day). The rates incurred through the ATM machines will still beat the exchange rates I've seen at the money exchange places I've seen here and there (a lot of malls have them). If you have American Express, you might try one of their offices. I'm not sure about the states, but in London I used to get a fair (not great) exchange rate.

  3. You can exchange money at most airports, though the exchange rate is not usually the best. All banks will charge you a fee, and many credit cards now charge a foreign currency exchange fee for purchases in a different country, although their exchange rates are usually quite good. ATM machines also give a decent exchange rate, but typically charge you for using a machine not connected to your bank. The only suggestion that might be less costly (because you will pay a commission in the states) is to find a bank that is affiliated with your bank in the UK.
