I plan to exchange a couple dollars at the bank for some coins because I am looking for coins to put into my collection. I just have a few questions. Do you need to have an account at the bank to exchange the money? And do you need to be a certein age to exchange the money? Thank you in advance.

  1. You should not have any problems at any bank on exchanging bills for coins. Some stores may do it too. Just be nice when asking to do it and if they aren't willing you can always ask to speak with their boss when you ask to speak with the boss then they probably won't give you any problems fearing that they may get into trouble. You could check at coin shows and estate sales and etc. You may even want to do some research on the internet as well. Good luck !

  2. No. You can do it with no problem, at any bank you want. You could also just go to most supermarkets and ask. No one should hassle you for it.

  3. No you can take in one roll at a time if you want most banks dont care. :)

    good luck

  4. You need to know the amounts of coins in a roll if you are going to ask for a whole roll of coins.

    Pennies - 50 cents

    Nickels - $2

    Dimes - $5

    Quarters - $10

  5. Sure, for only a few dollars, any bank teller will be glad to dump their change. Just be polite and friendly when you do it.

Stores are another good idea, but be sure they are not too busy when you ask.

You also may want to check out a coin dealer, they often have some special packages to young collectors, a lot of times worth more than the few dollars you would pay.

And go to a coin show sometime! I have seen some vendors just plain give out a free coin from their "grab bag" pile to a young collector to help them get started!

Good luck, you have picked a great hobby that can pay big dividends over the years to come.

  6. You should be able to do it without a problem, but getting what you need for your collection will be more challenging.  Very often banks will not have brand new bills or coins and it is unreasonable for you to ask them to break 15 rolls of quarters until they find the quarter you want.  It just may prove to be more difficult than you think, but for different reasons.
