Exciting memories are still fresh - Glorious Goodwood 2011 (Part 2)
After three exciting days, the spectators at Goodwood were looking forward to a lot more thrill and drama, and last year’s festival did not disappoint them. The venue hosted plenty of major events on the final two days, and all of them were quite entertaining.
The fourth day started off with a huge upset in the Group 3 Coutts Glorious Stakes. Drunken Sailor made an excellent finish to bag the top prize only by a head’s distance. Harris Tweed ran equally well, but Michael Moroney’s charge stole the show in the
dying moments of the race.
Tanqueray Richmond Stakes was another graded event on the fourth day. It produced an expected result, as Harbour Watch outclassed the rest of the pack to finish on top of the table. Richard Hannon’s trainee was in total command all the way through and consequently,
seized the first spot by two and a quarter lengths.
The Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes saw Chachamaidee doing a wonderful act. Despite a not-so-impressive start, Sir Henry Cecil’s 9-2 chance ran superbly, and with the help of an outstanding effort inside the final furlong, the dashing runner clinched the top rank
by 2¾ lengths.
The final day of the festival staged only a single graded meeting. It was such a thrilling battle that the spectators did not regret their decision of coming to the racecourse. After producing plenty of breathtaking moments, Midday succeeded in topping the
table in the Group 1 Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes British Champions' Series.
The 6-4 favourite was not in command at the outset, but an extraordinary finish helped him take the glory away from her rivals. Under Frankie Dettori, Snow Fairy tried to spoil the party, but the champion mare did not let her do anything special. Following
her splendid work, the mare secured the first place by a couple of lengths.
After so much thrill, only a good ending was required to make the festival unforgettable, and Albaqaa wrapped up the proceedings with a huge bang. P. J. O'Gorman’s trainee caused a huge upset, winning the Telegraph Apprentice Stakes (Handicap) by a couple
of lengths. Under Kieran O'Neill, the 10-1 chance outsmarted the likes of Guest Book and Truism to enjoy the party.
Last year’s Glorious Goodwood Festival was one of the best of all time. The horseracing lovers are anticipating an equally interesting event this season, and with a lot of quality runners in the line-up, an awe-inspiring meeting is on the cards.
