  1. I don't think the U.S. government does anything for the athletes. America gets the benefit of looking good on the world stage as Americans win the medals, but does little or nothing for the athletes. Phone calls from the president don't count.

Most other nations do more for their athletes.

Rebuilding Iraq. Flying Pelosi and her friends around on a government jet. Now the U.S.A has lots of "taxpayer" money for that.

  2. Gold: $25,000; Silver: $15,000; Bronze: $10,000

This was in response to the generous gifts and money some of the rest of the countries bestowed upon their athletes.

The amount given from the U.S. Olympic Committee may be pittances compared to many countries.  That amount may be nothing to Kobe Bryant, yet it may mean a lot more than the dollar amount to someone like Henry Cejudo.  But I doubt that Khatuna Lorig was thinking much about cash when she was edged out of the semifinals into 5th.

I do find it heartening how some spend this prize money.  Joey Cheek donated his 2006 earnings to an organization that promotes sports for underprivileged children.

With the adversity highlighted by the efforts of Samia Yusuf Omar of Somalia, promoting sports around the world is a most worthwhile endeavor.
