Exclusive lanes to be allotted during London Olympics 2012
Baroness Garden, the sports minister for Great Britain, has recently made the announcement that ministers will not be making use of the lanes that have been specially allotted to athletes of the London 2012 Olympic Games as well as the officials. These special
lanes will be exclusively reserved for athletes and the officials during the entire time period of the Olympic Games.
The people that are associated with the Olympic Games are called the Olympics family and only the Olympic family will be getting special privilege at the event. However, the ministers that have to deal with the Olympic Games will be given special access
by LOCOG. Not only that, those concerned with security would also be provided with special access.
There has been much speculation about the fact that the lanes would increase traffic congestion greatly in the city. There will be a total of 18,000 athletes as well as officials who will be making use of the Olympic Route Network. This network consists
of the Olympic lanes and spans a total area of 109 miles.
The percentage of roads of London that have been allocated to the Games separately are 1% in all. During the time of the Olympic Games, there will be no road works on the network in order to make travel speedy as well as efficient.
Lanes have been allocated in key areas that are present in the vicinity of the main Olympic sites at Stratford. Also, central parts of London will also be given lanes that will be exclusive to the Olympic traffic during the time that the event takes place.
In the event that anyone is found to be using the lanes that have been allocated for the Olympic traffic during the event, the person will be charged with a fine worth £200. Not only that, Baroness Garden emphasised the exclusivity of the lanes in the following
words: "Will ministers use ORN Games lanes? The answer is no."
Several such measures are being taken to make the Olympic Games a success next year.
