I'm 19 and I'm about 6'1'' and I weigh about 235. I've been running/walking 4 miles just about three days a week, for about a month. I usually eat supper and then go out and run at about 6 or 7, but I think I might be doing something wrong, should I run before I eat dinner, or after I eat dinner, in order to lose weight. I'm trying to get down to about 200 or 195 lbs

  1. Definitely eat AFTER your workouts.  Excercise temporarily increases your basal metabolic rate. Keep your soluable protein intake to no more than 200 grams/day.  This will limit your muscle growth.

I'm guessing that you have already hit our "plateau".  Start lifting weights and increase your calcium and chromium picolinate intake.

Do not lose more than 4 lbs of fat per week.  Any more than this, you are at risk of damaging your Liver.  Your body could be tricked into reacting to a high fat diet as your stored fat become liquid lipo proteins.

Reduce the amount of food per main meals and spread out the rest of the calories to maintain a steady insuline level.

If you are calorie counting, keep in mind that 3000 extra calories will gain one pound in fat.  So you only have to reduce your weekly intake by 10,000 calories per week.

When I was your age (70 inches tall and 190 lbs), I swam 10 miles a week, ran only 10 miles a week, and bicycled 50 miles a week.  I also lifted weights to increase muscles to help me sprint in the water.  The added muscles increased my basal metabolic rate which lead to faster weight loss.  The leanest I got was about 8% bodyfat at 196 lbs.

Start ready magazines for runners or body builders and Good luck.

    Edit:

I can not believe the c**p people put on here.  PT in the morning is better ONLY because of the amount of pollution in the air.

The raw fuel going into your skeletal motor cells  is sugar.  Your cell will store the excess sugar as glycogen.  The actual fuel used by your cell is ATP, adenosine triphosphate.  The chemical conversions end up making sugar (sucrose, glucose, lactose, and fructose) into Carbon dioxide and water.

Once your sugar level falls below a threashold level, your body will start to convert your stored fat into liquid lipids and release it into your blood stream.  Your body converts the fat into complex proteins.  Those proteins in turn are converted into  starches.  Starches (carbs) then converted to sugars.

your body is about 90% efficient in converting food fats into stored body fats.  It is only 20% efficient in converting proteins into stored body fat.  This is the basis of the protein based diets.  When you reduce carbs, you are forcing your hypoglycemic body to burn your stored fats.  You are also forcing your body to catabolize it's own muscles.

By doing anaerobic excercises, the lactic acid actually triggers muscle growth because your body thinks it is working beyond normal.  More muscles, more active fuel conversion.

  2. Run before dinner. Have a piece of fruit before you leave if you require the sugar boost. If you can, try to get your run finished a bit before dinner, otherwise you may be too tired to eat (and you'll feel full really quick). Make sure you have a healthy dinner

  3. ok i know when i lost my weight every one told me to exercise in the am that is the best time for ur body.  But I am so not an am person, so I went for an hour walk at lunch,

when I got home, Id do m stuff, eat dinner then around 9-10pm when I always get full of energy...Id do it then, stretching, yoga, dancing, aerobics, for about an hour or so, then Id shower and sleep like  a baby.

It allowed me to loose 100 lbs in a period of about 5 months,

Of course changing my eating habits helped too,. smaller portions, not a thing except water after 7pm...and tons of water. that is what worked for me personally.

Everyones body is different if what ur doing isn't working, try switching ur times around.  Instead of a run try a bike ride or yoga or a sport like tennis... or do like I did and do aerobics and dancing (keep ur heart rate up and moving for at least an hour) in the privacy of ur own home

just take it slow, its ok to go slow and people who lose at a slower rate are more likely to be able to keep it off and for longer.

don't give up.  you can do it! good luck

  4. Exercise BEFORE dinner. Cardio exercise speeds up your metabolism for several hours after your workout...therefore...your body will be able to burn "dinner" efficiently.  Also, eat less calories than you burn, but make sure you eat.  If you dont, your body will "panic" thinking there are no goodies available and it will store the little you do eat.  Good Luck!

  5. I would definitely suggest you eat after you run. That way you won't have any food in your stomach trying to digest while you run. And besides, after you exercise you are still burning calories, so eating after is totally fine!

  6. It is best to do the work out early in the morning. You can drink a glass of water in the empty stomach and start the work out.

If that time is not suitable to you, you have to stick on evening time. There too,  before dinner. The rule of thumb is there should be a minimum gap of two and half hour between your solid food intake and your work out time.

    Have a great day.

  7. It is best to eat more than 2 hours, but less than 4 hours before exercise.

A balanced diet of all 6 food groups from the Food Guide Pyramid would be OK to eat 2 - 4 hours before exercising. High fat or high sugar foods are not recommended nor would a large meal be a good idea. Blood pools around your stomach and intestines for up to 2 hours after a meal, helping your body digest and absorb the nutrients from the food you ate. During that time, there is less blood in your legs and arms to power physical activities. Large meals can also make you feel sleepy.

Your body prefers to run on the sugar in your blood (glucose). Carbohydrates like bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cereal, crackers (starch), fruit or fruit juice are good foods to eat before exercise as they quickly break down into glucose. After exercise, carbohydrates quickly replace glucose your body used during exercise.

  8. It's better to eat after you exercise and the ideal time to exercise is in the morning.  It will speed up your metabolism for the day.
