Exeter Chiefs trounce Sale Sharks by 30-23 in Aviva Premiership encounter – Rugby News
Exeter Chiefs outclass Sale Shark by 30-23 after an interesting encounter played on November 25, at Edgeley Park, Stockport. It was tremendous comeback for Chiefs as they trailed by 20-0 at one point but good work during the second half helped them seal
an important victory. Sale Sharks led the contest by 23-7 at the end of first half and failed to add anything to their total after the break. Chiefs displayed a flawless defence after the interval and tackled all attacks from their rivals.
Exeter Chiefs secured the comfortable victory with a handsome margin of seven points. Sharks kept the opponents under immense pressure during the whole first half on both ends. They scored quick points and meanwhile denied every opportunity to the Sharks
until the 22nd minute of the match.
Nick Macleod off the marked for Sharks very early in the match with a penalty goal as the opposition conceded a foul some 35 meters away from the posts. Macleod committed no mistake while kicking the pill into goals from a good distance.
Two minutes later, he doubled the lead to 6-0 again in the same fashion. The spirited Sharks made repeated attacks on the scoring lines of Chiefs and discovered their loop holes of many occasions. They enjoyed an unanswered lead of 20-0 until Gareth Steenson
scored first try for Chiefs in the 22nd minute.
The equation was favouring the Sale Sharks with a good difference of 23-7 at the break. After the interval, Exeter Chiefs bounced back into the match quite nicely and surprised the Sharks with rock solid defence and rapid scoring.
Richard Baxter, Ignacio Mieres and Gareth Steenson helped their side with timely incursion and levelled the score to 23-23 with nine minutes remaining in the final whistle. Mieres’ try in the 79th minute of the match sealed the hard fought victory
for Chiefs with 30-23.
