iv noticed that the big cruisers have both exhaust on one side. my guess is that this is so that a person can get on and off the back seat without worying about getting burned. but i hate how this looks. i like their to be muffler on both sides. is it possible to change this and make it so that their is a muffler on either side.

  1. Do some fabricating to alter an exhaust, and mount the "dummy" pipe on the other side of the bike.

  2. anything is possible.

your premise is not completely accurate. putting the exhaust on one side clears space for the electronics, trans parts and other items.

more modern twins have intake on one side, and exhaust on the other.

the older models have exhaust on the front, and intake on the rear or sides.

general rules, i know there are exceptions.

  3. If you buy a Road KIng then you have one muffler on each side. THis is just one of many stock examples. No need to retrofit or modify anything.,Comes like that out of the factory and it certainly is not the only HD nor is it the only make=model cruiser out there that has dual exhaust -one on each side- in the cruiser markets....You can easily find at least one model in all the major brands....Good luck finding one that suits your style and taste

  4. This is done out of tradition. Originally, side-valve motors had their ports on one side so it followed that they often ran the pipes on the one side too. It has nothing to do with ergonomics at all.

You might consider a 2-into-1 exhaust to reduce the clutter on the one side. But I suppose if you're willing to pay for a custom setup you can get anything you want made for you.

I personally like there to be *no* mufflers on the side at all - possible on a sportbike (ala Ducati), not so much on a cruiser where the rear fender hugs the back tire. But that's just me.
