Expect Detroit Tigers to have a quiet offseason – MLB News
According to a leading sports website, the Detroit Tigers will have a very quiet offseason this year. The only big move made by the Tigers came last month when they signed on former Los Angeles outfielder Torii Hunter for a two year $26 million contract.
Hunter had a great time on the mound last season as he hit .313 with 16 home runs and 92 RBI’s. They Tigers had been watching him closely and as soon as the season they arranged an informal meeting with Hunter.
Shortly thereafter, Hunter tweeted that he has agreed to two year deal with the Club that will give him an excellent chance to win the World Series ring. Andy Dirks, Nick Castellanos and Avisail Garcia are expected to compete for the other outfield spot.
However, apart from the Hunter’s signing, the Tigers have not any major moves. All they did during the four day annual Winter Meetings in Nashville was trade a couple of Rule 5 guys and a Double A catcher.
"We don't play until April 1," said Dombrowski, referring to Opening Day in Minneapolis, "so you could go into March 23 and pick up that kind of guy. No I don't," Dombrowski said this week at the winter meetings. And I'll tell you why.”
"We all like to get some young blood on our club," Dombrowski said. "We all think, philosophically, it's always a healthy thing. (But) young guys sometimes aren't going to be 100-percent ready, so there's that breaking-in period."
For those, who were expecting the Tigers to play an active part in this year’s offseason, they need to change their philosophy. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Tigers have some of the best pitching and hitting talent on their 25 man big league roster.
In Prince Fielder, 2012 American League Most Valuable Player Miguel Cabrera, Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson and Omar Infante, they have a lineup capable of beating any team in Major League Baseball.
Tigers’ starting rotation is also looking strong. Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello and Doug Fister all displayed some a big part in Tigers’ American League Championship Series winning campaign last season. However, it will be interesting to
see if the General Manager Dave Dombrowski is looking to inject some fresh blood in Tigers’ squad.
