Expecting better prospects for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles – NFL Feature
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles made his National Football League (NFL) debut on November 18, 2012, in Week 11 against Washington Redskins.
It was quite bad experience for him as the team lost the game by 6-31. Foles acknowledged his mistakes in the game, he said:
"I have to get better. I'll learn from it though. I was able to see what I did fundamentally, maybe decision-making sometimes, and improve on it.”
Eagles head coach Andy Reid, however, backed the rookie and highlighted some of the positive areas of his performance.
Andy said:
"I thought there were some good things that he did and then there are some things that he can definitely learn from.”
Foles is a hardworking young player, who has proved that he can do much better. In Week 14 game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Foles led his team towards a victory and ended their eight-game losing streak.
There is a striking difference in performances of Foles in Week 11 and 14. In his debut game he completed 21 of 46 passes for 204 yards with two interceptions and did not score any touchdown. Whereas, in Week 14 he scored 32 of 51 passes for 381 yards and
two touchdowns without any interception.
His quarterback rating was 40.5 in the debut game, while against Buccaneers it was 98.6. He seems to be a promising player showing consistent improvement.
In the postgame press conference on December 9, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who caught the game-winning pass from Foles, said of the rookie:
"You guys are seeing Nick Foles grow into a phenomenal quarterback right in front of your eyes."
Reid said of Foles:
“That’s a great thing when your quarterback is in tune like that. I’m proud of the kid.”
When Foles started his college career in 2010, he led Wildcats to a 7-1 victory against Iowa. He missed two games due to a knee injury and finished the season with 3,191 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
In 2011, he was 387 of 560 passes for 4,334 yards and 28 touchdowns. Even during the 2012 offseason, the rookie’s performance was hailed by many experts, and when the time came the Eagles did not hesitate in replacing veteran quarterback Michael Vick with
the rookie.
A concussion forced Vick out of the team, allowing Foles to take charge of the offence. Since Vick did not perform well right from the start of the season, the Eagles have decided to stick with the rookie on the starting line.
Foles has a great chance of utilising this opportunity and become the Eagles’ franchise quarterback. It is certain that the Eagles are not going to make the postseason this year, and this has brought head coach Andy Reid under pressure too.
However, it is a blessing in disguise for young players who can impress the management during the rest of the games and secure long-term prospects.
Reid is a great coach and has the most wins total in NFL history that is 120 games. He is the one who has all the abilities of transforming a youngster into an extraordinary player and Foles must learn as much as possible from him.
