Question:

Expensive Laundry?

I have a ton of expensive polos in almost every color. Most of these polos are extremely bright and heavily colored. After washing them for a while, I notice that the colors fade. I must be doing something wrong, because these are designer brand clothes with very high quality fabrics.

I think it is because I am using the wrong technique or wrong detergents? I just went to the supermarket and saw a whole wall of detergents. My head hurts because I have no idea what is the difference among all these different formulas and descriptions. Please give me some suggestion with this type of laundry. Someone suggested Woolite's delicate wash.

I recently bought a Burberry white polo. The tag says it cannot be bleached. Ouch headache!!! I wash all of my cloth together with bleach!!! I don't know how to wash it now and not destroy it or dye it in another color. I cannot take any chances.

Please fill me up with laundry facts and information. Thank you.

  1. only cotton can be washed with bleach and i use lukewarm water (socks, underware, and sheets).

I found that you can use baking soda with other cothes and will not harm clothing like the bleach.

  2. I actually have used this same recipe for fabrics, threads and yarn I use for crafting.  I also use it to set reds when I first purchase them.  I have always soaked items in small tubs overnight and then washing them normally instead of adding ingredients to the wash as is suggested.

    I hope this will help.

  3. Hot water is for WHITES

    Cold water is for colors

Warm water is for Towels/Blankets/Removing Stains

Detergents come with different perfumes, there only a few that don't have any perfumes or dyes.

Bleach should only be add to whites because it brightness them. So that could explain why there fading.

In my family my mom uses Cheer Color Guard 60 loads of powder laundry detergent for about 8.99. She is about 1/2 scoop per load.

  4. Smurfett's on the story.

I can only add that if you wash in hot water and use a bleach, then colours will fade.

A good soaking overnight in your wool wash stuff should help before you put it through the machine.

Detergent is a personal choice involving cost, eco friendliness and cleaning power.

As an aside, front loading machines use a different detergent because they are more efficient washers.

Research over the net should help you solve your issues.

  5. 1)  I recommend you buy and use Arm &

Hammer powder detergent.  Get the one that's marked FREE, which means it has

no perfumes, dyes or additives.  This is

a mild detergent but it cleans very well.

    2)  Read the directions very carefully and do

    what it says.

    3) For bright colors, it's best to separate your laundry by color and wash in Warm or

    Cold water only.

    4) DO NOT USE ANY BLEACH on colored clothes.  There is SUPPOSEDLY a bleach

now that's safe for colored.  I don't trust it.

    5)  I separate my colors thusly...all the whites together ( use only Oxyclean to whiten, no bleach).  And I save up all my blues and blacks and wash them by themselves.  Then I save up all the reds, pinks and purples and wash these by themselves.

    6)  to wash polos like with a yellow stripe and a dark blue stripe, I would wash it by

hand and put some white vinegar in the

rinse water.  Vinegar helps to SET colors

so they don't run or fade.

    7)  You have probably ruined a lot of shirts

by using bleach.  Bleach is for whites ONLY.

    8) NOTE;  Please be aware that if you live

in the city, you will have bleach added to your water supply.  Over time that will fade

    your clothes also.

    9)  Quality clothes (especially with bright

colors) need special care.  they can't just

be thrown together in the washer or they

    will be ruined.
