Question:

Experience required for non-certified Surgical Technician?

This may be a stupid question, but does a non-certified Surgical Technician have to have experience?

The requirements on the job listing are simply this: Associate's degree (A. A.) from an accredited School preferred. Must hold a current certificate in BCLS. So other than the BCLS certification there are no other definite requirements. I have a Bachelor's degree (in psychology) and the BCLS certification, so do I have a shot at this?

My mom, a nurse, said that sometimes surgeons like to train their own assistants.

  1. Unless they are assuming that the certification process included clinical experience, it doesn't seem they require actual experience.  I agree that many surgeons like to train their own.  There might be a lower salary during a "training period," so be clear about what that might be when you interview.

  2. You meet the minimum (your degree is higher than the AA), and if you will get on the job training, I see no reason why you should worry.

    Hope you get the job!
