I'd really like to land my axel this year, and my coach says the best time to train is in the summer when I have free time. How often did you skate when you were trying to learn your axel, and how much more besides practicing on ice did it take to get it?

Thanks a bunch. :D

  1. My daughter skated all summer during figure skating camp. 6:00 am to 10:00, then off ice training from 10:30 to 12:00 noon, then home, back on the ice from 2:30 to 5:30 pm, monday to Friday, and on Saturday from 6:00 am to 10:00 am. Off ice training from 10:30 to 12:00 noon, no afternoon session, off on Sunday. This was June,July, and August. It was about 3 hours in the morning (break for breakfast) and 3 hours in the afternoon, so 6 hours a day, and 4 hours on Saturday.

She already had her axel and all of her doubles (working on double axel) the last time she did this 2 summers ago. She has since quit skating.

  2. Heyy :). When i was learning my axel i was skating about 3 times a week and did exercises in my lesson such as practising the rotation by jumping it on the spot on 2 feet or trying from stand still over and over and over again.. Apart from on ice, i practised it in the garden. Probably looked stupid but it was really worth it cos it only took about 6 months. I hope u get urs soon, i know its annoyin but when u do get it ul feel great! gd luck! xx

Ps. sure the summers gd cos ur not at school or anything so u can commit a lot of free time. dont feel rushed though, it may take u longer than the holidays but who cares, ul get it in ur own time :)

  3. I typically didn't change my skating schedule during the summer much besides a few more practice sessions, and only one extra lesson per week. My coach was always careful not to over train skaters during the summer. She always told me that if I felt like skating extra to just skate an extra session and practice, but if I was tired then I should just relax and not wear myself out. I typically skated 8-12 hours per week, usually closer to the 10 hour range in the summer, and during the school year I would be around 8-10 depending on how busy I was.

The Axel is a really hard jump, but once you get it you feel a lot better about it. It took me around 6 months to get my Axel, but every skater has their own learning rate, I know some skaters that got it easily within the first month, and there there are others who struggle with it for many months. Good luck and have fun skating!

  4. ok. well during the summer all I do is skate. I get up at 7 am. I have some time to sleep in!!! Then I get to the rink at eight the latest and warm up. until nine. Then I have a lesson with my coach judy. The, I stay and skate until one o clock and my mom picks me up  to go to another rink that is like 20 minutes away. I then have a 2 hour lesson with my coach richard. Then I go back to the other rink, skate until 5 and go home sleep and relax. Until the next day starts. In the first 2 weeks of june, I go to el segundo california to get my programs choreographed by my choreographer sarah. This is my summer.

  5. every day for 3 hours(6am-9am) last summer. And if you live in the us, try to get to Lake Placid, NY for even just a week. Get yourself on a harness, but not too much, just enough to get the feel for it. This summer i can't skate as much, money's becomming an issue(especially gas) so i'm staying in LP and there's so many classes you can take there.

Your axel won't come without hard work and determination. I should know, it took me 5 years to land it right. It's amazing now, but i never stopped trying. Don't give up because once you get it right, it's there forever(i haven't done one wrong since i got it). Keep skating!!!<333

  6. During the summer last year I went one more extra day besides the two week summer camp. And skated around 4 hours per day.

As for the axel... I'm actually still working on it now, I learned in mid-March... D:

  7. this summer i'm skating 5 day a week in help in a skating summer camp
