  1. From a shear numbers perspective WPS betting returns the most to the bettors, the exotics Exactas, quinellas etc) have a larger takeout (read the program these are regulated by the state) . . .

So I have always been strictly WPS bettor

  2. if you want big risk big reward it is the pick 6 if you want little risk little reward it is definently the show bet good luck and enjoy!

  3. The truest best bet is simply the "win" bet. Pick your horse and just bet a win ticket. I have been in the racehorse business for 20 years and still can't hardly ever win.

  4. gambling can lead to a serious addiction problem. beware!

  5. The best bet to put on a horse is different than the best bet to put on a horse race. If you are only betting a single entry, your options are restricted to win, place, and show. All other bets involve other horses (exactas, trifectas, etc.)

Professional bettors tend to wager almost exclusively on exactas and Pick 3 (or Pick 4 or Pick 6) wagers, because of the substantially increased payoffs. Very few restrict wagers to one entry, and will generally ignore wagers on entries going to post at odds of less than 5 to 2.

Because so many people are able to read the Daily Racing Form past performances well enough to locate the strong contenders, those contenders usually do not return enough in the betting pools to be worthwhile. That is, they do not win often enough at high enough prices to be profitable.

On the other hand, "counter-intuitive" wagering is often advantageous. For example, using the information that favorites (on average) only win about a third of the races. That means they lose two-thirds. It is often more profitable to make a wager on the second or third strongest contender (as determined by the odds available) simply because when they win, they pay substantially more than the favorites.

The worst possible bet is the "four horse box exacta" often recommended on various online forums. Despite occasional windfall profits, the overall return on such wagers is in the area of 50-60%. That means you only get back 50 to 60 cents for every dollar you put in. Boxing four horses in the exacta costs $48 a race. That is about $500 a day for each track bet.

For individual best bets, try the best bet features of:

Both offer free selections daily, with Best Bets clearly labeled. Both also feature extensive information resources on all aspects of wagering and handicapping, all free. The Best Bets are often entries missed by the casual racing fans, and offer the possibility of a positive return.

  6. The Show bet gives you the best chance of winning, but you don't win much unless it is a very longshot.

You win if your horse comes in 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

  7. Every race is different, and the best bet will vary depending on the conditions of the race on the odds.  The best betting strategy is to make the bet that you feel the most confident about, either because you are sure it will be a winning bet or because you feel the odds are so out of line with the way you see the race that you want to take a chance on it.  If you feel you know the winner, you should bet him to win.  Now, if he is the heavy favorite, it might get a little tricky. My  rule of thumb is that as long as the numerator is higher than the denominator (i.e, 6/5 or better), if you really like a horse and feel that he can't lose you can play him straight up to win.  If the odds are even money or worse, I like to play the exacta wheel with the favorite on top and all the horses to finish in second.  I'll do the same thing if the daily double begins in that race.  Take the sure thing in the first race, take the field in the second.  Yesterday at Santa Anita, for example, the 3/5 favorite came in first in the first race and the heaviest longshot finished second.  Another longshot won the 2nd race.  I had the $10.10 exacta for $4, but I missed hitting the $67 double because I got too conservative with the second race and only played the two horses I thought could win.  The other example, if you see a horse going at let's say 8-1 and you think he can win, take him to win and, if you like, maybe place and show.  Maybe you are seeing something the other bettors are missing.  Maybe you're wrong, but you'd hate to be right and not be holding the ticket.
