Question:

Experiences in Canvassing??

I might be offered a position this summer with an environmental agency, and many of the jobs they have involve canvassing. I've never done that before, but I have seen many people doing it on the streets and alot of the time they get ignored or turned down. Does anyone have any (positive) experiences or stories about canvassing??

  1. -- Make it clear right from the start that you are NOT selling anything ("Hi, my name is so-and-so, and I'm canvassing on behalf of xxxx. I'm not selling anything, just handing out info and asking for signatures on this petition.... do you have five minutes to talk?")

-- Have material to give to everyone that provides a web site for more information.

-- Take no for an answer. Thank the person and, if they seem at all annoyed or hostile, get away quickly.

-- If there is a sign that says "No solicitors", respect that, even though you aren't, technically, selling anything

-- You should canvass with another person; it's not something you should do by yourself.

-- Remember *why* you are doing this. Remember that voter registration drives, environmental movements, civil rights movements and other campaigns all involve exactly what you are doing.

    -- Rehearse your presentation.
