Experiences in Canvassing??

Question

I might be offered a position this summer with an environmental agency, and many of the jobs they have involve canvassing. I've never done that before, but I have seen many people doing it on the streets and alot of the time they get ignored or turned down. Does anyone have any (positive) experiences or stories about canvassing??

-- Make it clear right from the start that you are NOT selling anything ("Hi, my name is so-and-so, and I'm canvassing on behalf of xxxx. I'm not selling anything, just handing out info and asking for signatures on this petition.... do you have five minutes to talk?")

-- Have material to give to everyone that provides a web site for more information.

-- Take no for an answer. Thank the person and, if they seem at all annoyed or hostile, get away quickly.

-- If there is a sign that says "No solicitors", respect that, even though you aren't, technically, selling anything

-- You should canvass with another person; it's not something you should do by yourself.

-- Remember *why* you are doing this. Remember that voter registration drives, environmental movements, civil rights movements and other campaigns all involve exactly what you are doing.

-- Rehearse your presentation.
