Experiencing a high screeching sound while changing gears in a vw golf 1.8 cl automatic. This isnt a constant screech and doesnt happen every single time the car changes gears. What could this possibly be? The sound is more noticeable on the left front side of the car in the area of the wheel? Its kind of like a skidding noice, squeek?

  1. Your engine belts are old and just need to be lubed up a bit or replaced depending on their condition

  2. If you say the sound is coming from the left side of the car, I would say it was your drive belts loose or worn down, they are screeching when the car changes gear, because your RPM is changing to multiple different speeds at this point and the traction on the belt is too low so it is slipping. If you find it starts to screech more and more, I suggest getting new drive belts.

    cant be 100% certain though.

    Hope this Helps

  3. sell it...or youll need a new autobox soon

  4. Sounds like your  Torque convertor is breaking up

  5. Belt squeal.  Is it as you lift up the clutch to engage the gear?
