Experts disagree over Dhoni’s eligibility for Test captaincy – Cricket News Update
Following the Indian team’s dismal showings in Test series abroad, and their drop to the third spot on the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 has been called into question, with experts divided in their opinions about his abilities.
“India has lost too many Tests overseas, eight in a row. Is that not a sign enough for making changes?” questioned http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sourav-Chandidas-Ganguly-c90746, adding that the selectors need to choose specific players separately for each format of the game.
While the Indian team did manage to defeat the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 2-0 (3) in a Test series on home soil in November 2011, their luck did not hold during the foreign tours. After suffering an embarrassing 4-0 capitulation in the Pataudi Trophy last year in July/August
against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, which they also lost by a similar margin.
“If Dhoni has to be captain of the Test team, he has to perform better. Look at his performance. He will not be picked for a Test team,” Ganguly said.
However, former Indian captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kapil-Dev-c70234, disagreed with Ganguly, saying the current skipper had been able to spur the team to new heights.
“Dhoni has been one of the best captains in recent times ... He has been able to motivate the team which has won laurels,” said Kapil.
He went on to add that it was unjust to solely blame the captain for the team’s losses, since there were obviously other players who had not performed up to the mark. The recent failures of the national side in the ongoing tri-series have been attributed
to the top-order batsmen’s inability to stay at the crease for longer periods.
The two former players also found themselves disagreeing over the choice of a replacement for Dhoni.
Ganguly advocated the appointment of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 as Test captain, highlighting his brilliant track record. Under his reign, the team has won two, tied one and lost one – the defeat coming recently against the Aussies at Adelaide.
“Sehwag is a great Test cricketer ... See his record as a Test captain. Before Adelaide, he won all that he led,” he said.
Kapil, however, was of the opinion that Sehwag, despite being a top-class batsman, did not have the right kind of attitude, nor has the ability to motivate the team to greater heights if one compares him with the current Men in Blue captain.
