Expired Green Card, ?

my green card is expiring this week, I have applied for another one in may and the case is still pending, I called the immigration customer service but they didn't give me any other info except the recipt number and that it will take about a year for me to get the new one.

I'm currently in Japan with my husband who is military and I'm working for financial institution that requires green card dose the pending case allows me to continue to work or can they let me go when my green card expires.

Your status as a permanent resident of the US has not changed, the piece of plastic identifying you as a permanent resident is expiring.  The company you work for can do whatever they want to but they should not fire you because your status has not changed.  You need to talk to the HR people at your firm.
