Expired USP/0.9% Sodium Chloride on cancer patient IV?

My uncle is a stomach cancer patient, in stage IV, unfortunately the cancer keeps advancing and leaving him weaker. Today we took him to the doctor since he was getting more dehydrated and a nurse gave him an injection of USP/0.9% Sodium Chloride, however it expired March 2008. I asked her why she was administering an expired solution, and she said it posed no problem and wouldn't affect him.

Now I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but considering he's a cancer patient in the last stage...wouldn't an expired injection such as USP/0.9% Sodium Chloride be hazardous?

  1. It is just salt water to help rehydrate him, and help with blood volume.  It won't affect him in any way.
