During the 1972 election,some people (Republicans) in CREEP (the committee to re-elect the president) decided to bug the election headquarters of the Democrats at the Watergate building in Washington.They were caught in the act and arrested.President Nixon and some of his top people decided to pay hush money to the arrested men.Woodward & Bernstein,reporters from the Washington Post,used a source in the government known as Deep Throat and published stories saying Nixon was covering up the Watergate affair.Congress formed a committee to investigate and this committee learned Nixon had been taping his Oval Office conversations.These tapes were released to the committee and the public on orders of the Supreme Court.The tapes gave evidence Nixon was guilty of obstruction of justice.The House of Representatives Judiciary committee voted to impeach Nixon.To avoid impeachment he resigned his office.
