Betting is an integral part of golf and there are many different types of golf bets. I need your generous help in understanding the concept of hole in golf betting.

  1. The concept of a press or pressing a bet is usually the most confusing to people just beginning golf. It can also be the most contentious part of betting if not discussed at the beginning of a round. Basically, a press is starting over with a new bet--while allowing the initial bet to continue. For example, in a Nassau, if you lose the first hole with a 5 to your opponent's 4, you are "down one." If you also lose the second hole with a 6 to your opponent's 5, you are down two. If your bet allows you to press when down two, you may do so at this point. Then, as you begin the third hole, you will be down two and even. If on the third hole, you have a 3 and your opponent has a 4, you win the hole. So at that point you will be down one, up one. Pressing allows a player to have the opportunity to press his or her bets in an attempt to get even. Of course, it also means you can lose more if you continue to play badly.
