By giving mouth to mouth, you are forcing air into the lungs which mimics the action of the respiratory system (breathing does the same thing)

By giving chest compressions, you are pushing on the heart forcing it to squeeze blood out, mimicing the action of the cardiovascular system (systole does the same thing)
