  1. Nuclear fission generates heat, it heats water, the water becomes steam, the steam drives steam turbines which control electric generators

    Compared to burning coal, nuclear power is cheaper and doesn't use a nonrenewable resource.

    Burning coal is dirty as h**l, while nuclear power generation is relatively clean, except afterwards you must dispose of the spent radioactive material.

    Just to compare to the other major way to do it, hydroelectric plants, which use moving flowing water to turn turbines, are probably the cleanest, but you have to construct dams and have access to large amounts of flowing water
