  1. Energy is conserved. It can neither be created or destroyed (unless it is a nuclear fission or fusion).

    Now, If an animal eats some food and gets 100x amount of energy from it and uses 90x amount of energy for its own survival and living, then only 10x amount of energy is left in its own body to be made use of by the next organism in the food chain. Since the animal can not create energy from nothing, there is lesser energy as you go along the food chain.
