  1. A d**n is built across a river, usually in a steep canyon. Water builds up behind the d**n to make a lake. You can imagine that the water stores up a lot of energy. Think about a water fall coming over the top of a very high d**n. If you were standing at the bottom the falling water would hit you very hard because of the energy it gets from falling. That same energy is used by a hydroelectric generator to make electricity.

Water is channeled down through tunnel where it flows very fast down hill. That fast moving water is feed into a turbine. The turbine is basically a big propeller and the fast moving water makes it spin. The turbine is attached to a generator. A generator is like an electric motor, except it works backwards. When you spin a generator, it makes electricity. So the water spins the turbine, which spins the generator, which makes electricity.
