I don't know what they gave you to read, but the crows can only spend so much time obtaining so much food, otherwise it's too inefficient.  Energy maximization relates to fitness optimization.  The crows may even dig up clams or whelks, but not eat them if it takes too long to open them so that the ratio of time spent to energy obtained is excessive.
