  1. Rapid development, control of the center.

  2. The basic concept of opening moves is to gain a more dominant  position on the board that is superior to your opponents position.   If you can do that then you put your opponent on the defensive and enables you to control the game.

  3. The goals of chess opening strategy are to develop your pieces, control the center of the board and create a strong defensive position for your king. Developing your pieces means moving as much fire power out onto the board as quickly as you can where it can do you the most good, because the center is the strong attack position. That is why you want to control the center of the board. Old fashion openings try to control the center directly by occupying it, while modern openings control the center indirectly. Creating a strong defense consists mainly of setting up the pawn skeleton and castling. (The pawns are like the defensive line in football and castling is a 'quarterback sneak'.) Good opening play moves a piece once to develop it, moves pawns as little as possible, protects the king and queen from harassing attacks, and ultimately creates an advantage in positioning that can be used to create a material advantage.
