My Dad had a heart attack Monday...he's not local, so I can't go see him & ask alot of questions.

He's had major heart attacks in the past - 10 years ago or so & has had bipass surgery twice already.

They're telling me that he had a mild heart attack & they're "put in a stint"

What does that mean?

  1. The word is stent. A stent is used for drainage or passage of fluids. It's like an inflatable tube.

  2. Most people have heart attacks from their arteries being blocked, or because of narrowing. So the doctors so in through the groin and put a stint in that helps expand the artery think of it like a balloon that blood can pass through. it is a very minor procedure any more and he should be allowed to leave the hospital the next day.

  3. I believe you mean a "stent."

A stent is a small mesh tube that’s used to treat narrowed or weakened arteries in the body, usually in a partially blocked heart coronary artery.

You may have a stent placed in an artery as part of a procedure called angioplasty (AN-jee-oh-plas-tee). Angioplasty can restore blood flow through narrowed or blocked arteries. Stents help prevent arteries from becoming narrowed or blocked again in the months or years after treatment with angioplasty. You may also have a stent placed in a weakened artery to improve blood flow and to help prevent the artery from bursting.

Stents are usually made of metal mesh, but sometimes they’re made of fabric. Fabric stents, also called stent grafts, are used in larger arteries. Some stents are coated with medicines that are slowly and continuously released into the artery. These medicines help prevent the artery from becoming blocked again.

  4. a stint is a small balloon inserted via a vein into the hearts artery to keep the artery open thus decreasing the risk of another heart attack.

usual done under local anasthetic and is a routen op....... very common in heart patients.

  5. A stint is a device that opens up a blocked artery in your heart. It allows the blood to flow better

  6. Here is a page about stents that might give you some additional information that is useful: http://www.smart-heart-living.com/cardia...

Your dad might find the website referenced below to be useful. It's about living with heart disease and has a wealth of information and resources.
