  1. William deposed the Saxon nobility and replaced them with his own Normans.  The normans introduced the concept of primogeniture, that is passing on estates intact to the oldest son, rather than distributing property among sons, daughters, and any other relatives, as the Saxons had done.

The normans abolished slavery, which was already outdated in Europe, and replaced it with the system by which lords rented out their land to tenant farmers in return for labour on their own land.

Huge castles were built all over england as military strongholds.  Spectacular cathedrals were also built.

The legal system, which in Saxon times had mostly consisted of seeking financial compensation for wrongs done, was replaced by one in which criminals were punished by the state, most often by hanging. Saxons were severely punished for any injury done to a Norman.

The Normans designated large areas of england as 'forests' which were royal hunting preserves, and anyone who hunted on these lands would be punished.

  2. Perhaps the biggest and most lasting change was the mixing of French language together with the existing language in England, which was largely from the Old German language.  These two languages fused and hybridized to form the beginnings of the English language that we're familiar with.

Another huge change was the building of the Tower of London, which was used for torture and political manipulation of people there.  Draconian enforcement of laws and cruel manipulation for political reasons happened to ensure the Normans would sustain power there, and not be driven back.
