  1. To help you understand the subject matter I will provide you with some helpful links.

    1. This site content deals with the effect of latitudinal effect on biome development, but on arctic eco-system.

This may help you to take a closer look, of course......

    2. Read the  last passage about global climatic pattern in this link

    3. Here you have a plenty of search results related to the subject matters

Q1. List the various terrestrial biomes of the world and describe any three of them.

Ans1. The terrestrial biomes are classified into altitudinal and latitudinal biomes.

The latidudinal biomes of the world are : Tundra, Taiga, Temperate deciduous forest, Tropical deciduous forest, Tropical rain/Evergreen forests, Chapparal, Tropical savannah, Grasslands and Deserts.

The altitudinal biomes are tropical rain forests, temperate deciduous forests, taiga and tundra. All these biomes can be found on mountains located in tropical regions. All these biomes reflect the same organization as the latitudinal biomes.

Desert : It occupies 1/5th of the land with sparse rain (less than 25cm/yr). Desert can be cold (e.g., Tibet) or hot (e.g., Thar, Sahara). Vegetation is consisting of  Cacti, Euphorbia (succulents), Acacia, Phoenix etc. Animals are Kangaroo/Desert Rat, Hare, Fox, Jackal etc. The desert rat does not take water, but obtains the latter from metabolism of food. Camel is adapted to desert conditions as it can protect its eyes and nostrils from dust and is capable of tolerating dehydration upto 40%. Ephemeral plants and animals occur during the rainy season, e.g., Boerhaavia repens.

Chapparal : It is broad-leaved scrub forest found in the Mediterranean region and Pacific coast of several countries with winter rain and dry summer. Vegetation consists of shrubs and small trees with hard and sclerophyllous leaves. Several plants are fire resistant. Plants include Sage, Arctostaphylos, Adenostemma etc. Fauna includes rats, chipmunks, tiger, snakes etc.

Tropical savannah : It is a warm  climate plain with coarse grasses, scattered shrubs and trees and seasonal rain. It recieves a rain of 100-150cm/yr. Savannah is named after the dominant tree, like Acacia. Kangaroo occurs in the tropical savannahs of Australia. Animals include Antelope, Rhino, Elephant, Tiger, Kangaroo. It is the cradle of human evolution.
