  1. Digicam.

A small digital camera usually favored by non-photographers. Most digicams have limited user control although there are some rather sophisticated ones. They are used for snapshots and if the user can differentiate between Aunt Sally and Uncle Ralph they are usually satisfied.

    Movie Camera.

A camera used to make movies. Once upon a time 16mm and then 8mm and later Super 8mm were the consumer's choices to document family events. VHS replaced Super 8mm and was challenged by 8mm video tape. Today its all done with a chip.

    SLR.

Single Lens Reflex camera. The user places their eye to a viewfinder and sees their subject directly through the camera lens. Used by serious hobbyists all the way up to working professional photographers. A SLR offers interchangeable lenses and full user control over aperture and shutter speed. The 35mm film SLR has probably taken more memorable photographs than any other camera. Today's version is the DSLR - Digital Single Lens Reflex. It, too, is evolving as the sensor size has been increased to the same size as a 35mm film negative - 24mm X 36mm - by Canon (5D, IDs Mark III) and Nikon (D3, D700) and soon Sony.

    Prosumer.

The class of entry-level DSLR cameras. Canon XSi, Nikon D40x, Sony A200, Pentax K200D and offerings from Fuji, Sigma and Olympus. Their construction is largely plastic composites. They are designed for the advanced amateur who wants to experience the control of the venerable 35mm film SLRs. It is possible to produce professional quality images with them if the photographer is skilled and knowledgeable.

    Polaroid.

A camera invented by Edwin Land. The goal was to give people "instant gratification" by having a camera that took the picture and then actually developed it while you waited. The results were never very good although professional photographers using Polaroid sheet film (5X7, 8X10) produced some excellent photographs. Polaroid film was also popular with portrait photographers who used a Polaroid back on their studio camera to check lighting, posing, etc. Very popular during the last half of the 20th. century the Polaroid camera was finally done in by the digital camera.

I hope this answers your question.

  2. digicam: digital camera, uses an SD card ( a removable storage device)

a movie cam: made for long videos, and is normally shake proof, and not great for photos.

SLR: single lense reflex camera, wich shows what u are taking on a screen, not just thru the view finder.

Prosumer cameras: made for people taht borderline proffesional and consumer.

Polariod: a camera with only a view finder, taht takes a photo, and prints it out. VERY expensive for the ink, the camera and the paper.

a digicam is the best bet.
