  1. The question you should be asking is "What are the similarities between earthquake and tsunamis," not the differences. EVERYTHING about them is different!! It's like comparing apples to oranges!

The medium that the waves travels through (i.e., water vs. rock) is different, the wave types/motions are different, the periods of waves are different, the velocity of waves are different. The way damage is induced is different. The breadth of the potential damage zones is different. The rate of occurrence is different. The average $$$ of damage caused is different.

Like I said, EVERYTHING is different.

  2. Tsunami is a giant wave caused by an earthquake at the bottom of the ocean.

  3. An earthquake is a shift in the plates that are the underlayment of our earth's surface. When an earthquake happens under water, the shift in the earth sends a giant shock wave under the water that travels for a long distance. If the underwater wave caused by that shock wave hits land, it is moving at perhaps hundreds of miles an hour and creates a huge tidal wave when it hits the land.

  4. tsunami- means wave in bay(in Japanese)

an earthquake is the moving of the titanic plates

  5. They are entirely different things.  An earthquake is a sudden release of energy caused by rupture of rocks.  Earthquakes happen when stress builds up in the crust mainly due to movements of  lihtospheric plates related to plate tectonics, and the rocks suddenly fail, like bending a ruler until it breaks.

A tsunami is a giant wave, which is caused by the very sudden displacement of a large volume of water, propagating across the ocean. It can be caused by a number of different mechanisms, among them earthquake ruptures, underwater volcanic explosions, meteorite impacts, and sudden failures of seafloor sediments.

  6. Earthquakes shake the buildings. But Tsunami creates the giant waves. Earthquakes leave no time of warning before the destruction. But Tsunami can give fairly enough time of warning before it struck our coast. Just because of our insufficient knowledge we lost the life of several thousands in Tsunami. I got a better chance to issue the warning 2 hours before Tsunami struck our coast with the simple type of earthquake alarm and my knowledge. But nobody believed my alert message. The yahoo group appreciated me as super star. But the seismologist group yet to understand the use of my life saving instruments. It is the fate if our people.
