Explain the energy changes which occur during and charging and discharging a rechargeable battery?

The chemistry of the battery plate material, and the electrolyte changes. As the battery discharges, the electrolyte generally, loses it's capacity to produce the electrical charge difference between the plates. It is this charge difference that produces the flow of electrical energy to begin with. Recharging restores that plate difference.
