  1. There are several transitions that students face in education, particularly special education.  They include transition from one activity to another, from one class or period to another, from one school to another, and from public school to adult life.  The teaching of life skills, in addition to academic skills, is important to prepare  all students, particularly those with disabilities to be able to function in settings outside their present classroom or school. Therefore, effective teaching involves the "generalization" of skills.  Students should be able to perform academic and life skills with any person, in any setting.  This requires teaching the same skill under different circumstances.  This teaching of generalized skills is so important that it has been addressed in the various revisions of IDEIA and is the purpose of the mandate for transition plans for students above age 16.
