  1. That's a bit farther back than I can recall, My memory stops mid 1800's, but I'll assume a few things.

       THEATER in the Era of Shakespeare, was likely very conservative as "dictated", and very likely attended by levels of the upper class. Even Opera and Ballet were pretty well regulated as to form and context.

       That changed as freedoms advanced, the church and governments became less the watchdogs, over the next 300 plus years.

       By the 19th Century, theater was generally a place where people of lesser means could not only ACT, but also be audience members, though the attitudes of the Conservatives anywhere remained pretty much the same. Sadly, or perhaps to its benefit, "Theater" changed as well, in the sense that they could be viewed by the population in strata, or levels of class and character, such as Saloon type Dance halls, versus serious, quality, standing performances and troupes.
