1. Psychiatry is the 'medical doctor' who believes that there is a 'physical cause' for all 'mental illnesses' and they are the ones who 'prescribe meds' to fix most problems. Psychotherapy is generally done by a psychiatrist, in addition to the medication, for people who have things like schizophrenia, bipolar syndrome, or other. Psychology is a non-medical (and not prescribing medications) view of psychiatry ... the 'counselor' who is a psychologist can work completely separately or under a psychiatrist, but they can also give 'psychotherapy' or simple 'therapy' (which can last from 6 weeks to two years) ... a sociologist is only associated with the psychological/psychiatric fields because many of those in need of a 'social worker' also need psychological counseling. The Social Worker is more into helping a person to find good housing, good food, learning how to budget properly, or how to 'get off drugs/alcohol' and have a 'good life' ... they also do some counseling, and a few are good at that ... but I am a retired psychologist, and I actually think the world would be much better off if there were NO 'social workers' giving 'therapy' and they did just a good job of 'helping make connections in the real world' ...
