  3. Due to carbon only having 4 electrons in its outer energy shell, it wants to form 4 bonds with other elements.  This enables carbon to form chains, branched chains and rings.  These structures wouldn't be possible if carbon could only form 3, 2, or 1 bond.

  4. Carbon can form large chains and complex molecules with itself and other atoms.
