For example British Telephone Company BT is laying claim to inventing the hypertext system that underpins the world wide web and wants the internet companies to shell out! BT says it was awarded world wide patents for hypertext until 1989 and that although most of the world wide rights have expired, the US patent is still good to 2006. BT with its legal team has approached US internet companies asking them to pay licensing fees. BT is a sophisticated user of patents and this could have serious implications in the US.
