  1. In lakes that are not completely stirred by the wind, you get stratification during summer and winter, with the densest water at the bottom. During the winter, it will probably be 4°C. During the summer, there will be three layers, an epilimnion, which is mixed by wave action, a relatively constant hypolimnion toward the bottom, and, between the two, a zone of rapid temperature change (>1°C per metre of depth), the thermocline.
