Explain thermal stratification in fresh water lake?

In lakes that are not completely stirred by the wind, you get stratification during summer and winter, with the densest water at the bottom. During the winter, it will probably be 4°C. During the summer, there will be three layers, an epilimnion, which is mixed by wave action, a relatively constant hypolimnion toward the bottom, and, between the two, a zone of rapid temperature change (>1°C per metre of depth), the thermocline.
