  1. Its not a phenomenon, its just that sound cant travel in the vacuum of space.  Sound needs to travel through a medium(air, water, metal), so when there is no air in space sound cannot travel.  When they are inside the space shuttle sound can travel though the oxygen inside

  2. the first answer is the correct answer, and to add to it, in the space shuttle theres air , so sound vibrations travel through these in the shuttle.

  3. In space there is no air so sound can't travel. Sound moves through matter by waves of compression spreading outwards. If there is nothing to compress, there is no way to spread the sound.

Inside there is air, which carries sound just like on Earth. Sound can also travel through a liquid or a solid.

  4. Sound is a pressure wave that propagates through a medium.  Empty space is not a good medium for sound.  The inside of the space shuttle, though, has an atmosphere, so sound travels just fine.

  5. Outside the craft there is no air for sound waves to travel through, there is air inside the craft.

  6. Sound is vibration, without something to vibrate in (vacuum of space) there is no sound.
